Occupational Lunar Space Anemia

Earth designation: Occupational Anemia

Occupational presentation of Anemia in lunar residents. Reduced red blood cell mass observed in lunar residents, thought to result from initial plasma volume reduction causing hemoconcentration followed by destruction of excess red blood cells. Also called "space anemia," this is distinct from Earth anemias and appears to persist for at least a year of l...

Lunar Risk Factors

Duration of lunar residence. Oxidative stress from radiation. Iron metabolism changes. Dietary iron adequacy in hydroponic diet. Chronic inflammatory state from stress.

Symptoms

Fatigue, dyspnea on exertion, pallor, tachycardia, cognitive difficulty.

Diagnosis

CBC with differential, iron studies, vitamin B12, folate, reticulocyte count, peripheral smear.

Treatment

Correct underlying cause. Iron supplementation, B12, folate if deficient. Erythropoietin in severe cases.

Lunar Medical Bay Protocol

Comprehensive anemia workup. Iron supplementation if iron-deficient. Vitamin B12 injection if deficient (absorption may be impaired in lunar diet). Dietary iron optimization from hydroponic legumes. Monitor hemoglobin quarterly. Reserve erythropoietin for severe cases with symptom impact. Telemedicine hematology if hemolytic anemia suspected.

Evacuation Criteria

Hemoglobin <7 g/dL symptomatic. Hemolytic crisis. Aplastic anemia.

Prevention

Annual CBC. Dietary iron monitoring. B12 supplementation for residents on fully plant-based lunar diet.
